Being an Encourager
In an article written by By Aaron Wilson -March 9, 2021 for Outreach, he talks about developing habits of uplifting people. He states: Everyone likes being valued, positively motivated and given hope for the future, but Christians know this longing goes deeper, originating from an innate desire for the God who gives encouragement (Rom. 15:5).
In this article he lists three practical tips to help us establish an encouraging spirit.
- Let Displays of Excellence Point us to the People Behind Them.
He states whether you’re enjoying a good meal or a well-crafted social media post, stop to acknowledge the people behind such displays of excellence. Instead of just experiencing excellence, let it trigger you to encourage the people who bring it about. Anytime you’re moved by “whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable,” or “anything praiseworthy,” think about the God and people who made it so (Phil. 4:8). Then, act on that prompting by taking the time to encourage others in their gifts and willingness to serve.
- Act in the Moment
He states too often, we think highly and fondly of others, but never get around to expressing that sentiment. Proverbs 25:11 says, “A word spoken at the right time is like gold apples in silver settings.” Don’t stockpile golden apples in settings of good intentions. Get in the habit of encouraging people in the moment as God brings them to mind
- Schedule Encouragement.
He states if you’ve never scheduled encouragement, give it a try. Decide right now on three people you want to encourage this coming week and plug each name into your calendar on a different day. This simple act will give you a practical system that will help you grow more accustomed to focusing on the needs of others throughout the week
It does takes intentionality to encourage people . It a different mindset is required in the way we approach people and social settings. Instead of asking the question, “How can I get others to notice me today?” A spirit of encouragement reverses that question by asking, “How can I bless others through this platform?
Today lets . make an intentional choice to be better together by growing in encouragement and taking practical steps to uplift the people God has brought into our lives.
